What has morality got to do with it?

Europe weakens itself through inconsistency in international politics. Israel is granted an almost unlimited green light under the banner of self defence, even when an entire population is labelled terrorist. The United States can act with impunity in Latin America, threatening governments and kidnapping presidents. There are open threats against Iran, including calls to overthrow its government, with little serious criticism from Europe.

Let me be clear. Maduro and Khamenei are not figures I feel any sympathy for. They are brutal dictators. What is happening in Iran, including the mass killing of protesters, is indefensible. It is also worth remembering that the Shah was a dictator too, even if he is now conveniently romanticised.

But that is not the core problem.

The problem is that Europe and the West routinely make deals with other authoritarian leaders who also repress their populations, ban protests, and crush opposition. I do not need to name them. Several are located in the Middle East. These regimes are treated as partners, allies, even friends.

This is where the hypocrisy lies.

There is only one warning to the dictators Europe currently calls friends. Western loyalty is volatile. History shows that alliances shift quickly and without remorse. Todays partners can become tomorrows enemies overnight. When that happens, there will be no memory of past silence, no gratitude for obedience, and no protection from the consequences. The West has always been ruthless when its mood changes.
