I am fed up with the hypocrisy surrounding Greenland. It is a colony of Denmark. Colonisation is wrong. Full stop. Greenland should be independent.

If Europe has any political spine left, it should support Greenlandic independence, recognise Greenland as a sovereign state, and establish diplomatic relations. Independence must mean independence from everyone. Greenland must not become a colony of the United States in another form. It should be up to Greenland alone to decide whether it wants military protection, and if so, from whom, under transparent and legally binding agreements.

Statements such as โ€œGreenland belongs to Denmarkโ€ are unacceptable. They reveal a profound lack of respect for the people who live there and for the principles Europe claims to uphold.

The so called compromise announced by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is equally troubling. Allowing the United States to continue pursuing the purchase of Greenland, while media reports openly discuss the possibility of Guantanamo style military facilities on the island, is not a diplomatic success. Europe may congratulate itself, but this reaction only exposes how detached and complacent it has become.

This is not strength. It is submission wrapped in self praise.

Europe likes to present itself as a project based on values, cooperation, and respect. Yet when tested, national interests prevail and colonial thinking resurfaces without embarrassment. Greenland makes this painfully visible. Some interests are treated as first class. Others, including the rights and voices of local populations, are treated as expendable.

I am no longer bitter about this. I used to believe in the idea of a pacifist, united Europe built on mutual respect. That vision is fading. What we are witnessing now is not a temporary failure, but a turning point. If this is how Europe handles Greenland, it is difficult to see how it can credibly defend its values elsewhere.
